Questionnaire to Identify Funding Trends for Research in Fluid Dynamics

The Division of Fluid Dynamics of the American Physical Society (APS/DFD) plans to develop a report on past, current and potential future funding trends in fluid dynamics. When completed, this report will be made available on the APS/DFD website. It will be used as part of an effort to develop new mechanisms to improve funding opportunities in fluid dynamics and to take advantage of existing mechanisms. We have found that useful data are difficult to obtain from within the funding agencies, so we are asking the fluid dynamics community to help us develop these data. We request principal investigators (PI and coPI) of fluids-related grants to fill in a Questionnaire with data on current and past granting activities from which the DFD will develop its report. The Questionnaire could take 15-20 minutes to fill out, depending on how readily the information is at hand; we suggest that you  review the Questionnaire and gather the information beforehand. We recognize the effort involved, however we are trying to advance our field of fluid dynamics, so please do your part to help. Please complete the Questionnaire by February 1, 2009, if possible. We plan to begin the data analysis process soon thereafter.

Fluid Dynamics Video

The Division of Fluid Dynamics is supporting the submission and archiving of fluid dynamics videos for both educational and technical content. Venues for archiving and disseminating videos are discussed in a new page available on the DFD website. In addition, starting at the 2008 meeting, all Gallery of Fluid Motion video entries will be archived in the eCommons/arXiv sytem. Description of how to submit to the arXiv server is described in the aforementioned article.

The website for the Fall, 2008 DFD meeting, to be held in San Antonio, Texas is now operational, and can be found at: http://dfd2008.tamu.edu/. The URL given in the post-card handed out at the Salt Lake City meeting was incorrect. Please also note that the deadline for abstract submission is August 4, 2008.

As part of our record of the past meetings, the invited talks at the annual DFD meeting are archived online as a technical record, and serve as a resource for promoting leading research trends in the area of Fluid Mechanics. Please see the archive for the most recent talks at the 2007 meeting.

Travel Fellowships available to ICTAM 2008 in Adelaide, Australia

The U.S. National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (USNC/TAM) announces that a limited amount of funds will be available for fellowships for those presenting papers at the 22nd International Congress on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ICTAM) to be held in Adelaide, Australia, August 24-30, 2008
